Sports Rehabilitation Physio Victoria

Our Effective Back Pain Treatment Approach.

Due to the advanced skill set of our physios at Broadmead Physiotherapy, we are able to take a multi-faceted approach to your treatment. This means even if you have tried treatment unsuccessfully before for your back pain, chances are we can help you!

What About Lower Back Pain?

The skilled physiotherapists at Broadmead Physiotherapy first treat back pain through education. We want you to understand WHY you’re experiencing lower back pain, and HOW we can prevent it from re-occurring. Ensuring that you understand what’s wrong with your lower back is the key to getting better. Most importantly, we’ll make sure that you know how we’re going to help you get back to normal. To do this, we use a variety of techniques.

Here are some of the treatment modalities we may use:

Manual therapy: mobilization of the joints to stretch them out to restore range of motion and to relax tight muscles

Manipulation: This is where we apply a quick stretch the joint to cause a “cracking” sound to relax muscles and restore range of motion

IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation): we use acupuncture needles to relax tight muscles caused by nerve irritation which in turn can take some pressure off the irritated nerve

Soft Tissue Mobilization: trigger point pressure to release tight muscles

Traction or Decompression: we use a machine to gently stretch your spine

Electrical modalities: to reduce inflammation, decrease pain and relax tight muscles

Stretches: to lengthen tight muscles

Home exercises: to strengthen muscles including the core

Education: so that you understand your injury fully

Referral: we will contact your GP or specialist if we feel you may require further testing (x-ray, CT, MRI, etc) or evaluation (specialist)

Why Our Multi-Modal Approach to Back Pain Works

Back pain rarely has a single cause. It can come from the spinal joints, discs, nerves, or the muscles that support your spine, often several at once. That’s why we don’t rely on one technique. Under one roof we combine manual therapy, intramuscular stimulation (IMS), spinal manipulation, traction and decompression, and shockwave therapy, and we adjust the plan as your recovery progresses.

Here’s how each approach helps your back:

  • Manual therapy and mobilization: restores movement in stiff spinal joints and eases the muscle guarding that keeps pain going.
  • IMS (intramuscular stimulation): targets the deep, nerve-driven muscle tightness that stretching alone often can’t reach. Our IMS-certified physiotherapists (CGIMS) use it to release that tension and take pressure off the irritated nerve.
  • Spinal manipulation: restores joint motion and can quickly reduce pain for the right type of back problem.
  • Traction and decompression: gently opens space around compressed discs and nerves.
  • Shockwave therapy (ESWT): supports healing in stubborn, longer-standing musculoskeletal pain.
  • Targeted exercise and education: rebuild the strength and movement patterns that protect your back long-term. This is the part that makes results last.

Why this matters: a clinic with one tool can only do one thing. Because we can move between approaches in a single clinic, we can keep adapting until we find what works for your back, including for people whose pain hasn’t settled with a single approach before.

Our physiotherapists hold advanced credentials including FCAMPT, CGIMS (Gunn IMS), and CAFCI (acupuncture), and the clinic has treated over 12,000 patients in Victoria since 2002.

Today I took my 90 year old mother in for an assessment of her back pain and a treatment plan. She has lost mobility and quality of life the past year and is grief stricken after the loss of her son. The front staff were friendly, helpful and organized. The Doctor was kind, professional and knowledgeable, taking the time to answer all of our questions. We were able to book a second appointment the following week for an ultrasound and cortisone treatment. With hope she will have less pain and be able to mobilize more easily so we can walk her to the garden were she used to sit with her son.read more

The secretaries and Dr. Atkins are friendly, informative and helpful. I am really grateful for the two appointments I have had this month to help with my left knee pain. It was especially helpful to be able to see in the ultrasound (and on a skeletal model) where the problem is exactly in my knee. I trust the cortisone shot I had today will lessen the pain. Thank you!read more
